Volume 4 of my selected poems includes my Civil Rights trilogy, "Elegy for Eric", "Cleveland Season", and "Charleston". I think you will find them both moving and thought provoking. Volume 4 also has a lighter more humorous side, with poems such as "Woodstuck", "Dean of Girls", "Sunbather", and "The Haw is Dancing". My political poems are "An Immoral War", my rebuke to President Bush Jr., and "Jack's Revenge", where I recap the results of the 2012 election with a dejected Karl Rove. Love poems include "Just a Kiss", "A Time Without Words", and "In a Woman". Anyone who has ever been in love will appreciate these. "Impressionist", and "Matissian Magic" are poems about art, and looking at the world with fresh eyes. Finally, "Amethyst Regret" is written from a feminine perspective, about relationship and loss. Enjoy the read and share the adventure. Peace.

I don’t usually think in terms of writing thank you notes to poets for their books; but, in the case of Jack Tomkovick’s collection, ANNIHILATING APATHY, thanking him for this new crop of poems is entirely appropriate. The poems in this newest collection in the series The Long Strange Journey nourish, sustain as well as entertain us.
Mr. Tomkovick leaves no stone unturned in his search of self and the elusive Other, as well as love and the complexities of the world surrounding his senses. His poems’ intrinsic rhythms can surge to the shore like waves or quickly unravel before your eyes, and you are reminded of “the hand is quicker than the eye”-- or is it? He’ll make you wonder and keep you alert with his bubbling fountain of wordplays.
The way poetry works is you don’t always read a book chronologically. You might browse first, then really dig into the ones that seem to match you. In the case of Mr. Tomkovick, you can’t just browse – there’s just too much heart and soul in each poem. So if you commit to the book, you will be rewarded with word-collages and images that stick with you. For instance, in “In Your Teens,” a life is diagrammed decade by decade.
His love poems glow with exuberance, joy, and out-and-out awe: such poems as “Warmth,” “A Time Without Words,” “Just a Kiss,” and “Relationship Conundrum,” (these are only a few) are all part of a compendium of the many meanings of love that Mr. Tomkovick explores thoughtfully. With “Rhetorical question” he is putting together the pieces of a relationship puzzle. Political influences [found in such poems as "Struck Out (p.17)," "An Immoral War," and "Jack's Revenge"] also figure strongly in this collection. I thank him too for including “Charleston,” a beautiful and heart-breaking poem of his personal and our collective grief. And he leaves the reader with a gleam of hopefulness.
There is something called the Fourth Wall, an imaginary wall between dramatist/poet and audience, a wall Mr. Tomkovick wishes to break through, that he describes in the poem, “The Times That Bind”:
…”I keep
jerking and twisting
thrashing about
as if to break through
some unseen barrier”…
And don’t forget his humor: see “Woodstuck,” “This is Just to Say, 1995” and many others. His humor is the answer to the Sphinx’s question (in case you are ever asked). “Amethyst Regret” ends this collection somewhat somberly; but, if anything, it is the peace offering that promises more poems to come. And, as readers, we’re on a roll: we can’t not look.

Annihilating Apathy Vol 4 The Long Strange Journey edition by John Tomkovick Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Though I write this in the midst of Christmas season, Jack Tomkovick is a man for all seasons. It was pretty chilly this morning on the way to work. As I held my breath to pass by those huddled outside for their morning smoke, I thought of the poem "Choices" and how aptly he described the scenario unfolding before me. That's what I really like about Jack's writings the pairing of "Cleveland Season," "Eulogy for Eric (If Only)," "Charleston" and "Jack's Revenge" (which touch upon topics of grand national and international importance) with those regarding personal and interpersonal experiences, actions and attitudes like "Heretic" and "Enough." A solid collection from a solid individual.
Jack Tomkovick does not disappoint in his latest volume of poetry ranging from almost 4 decades of his life. This time around I particularly liked his humorous poems such as "Woodstuck" about aging hippies and "The Haw is Dancing" as a personification of a local river in flood. Again metaphors you haven't heard before and word play abound, along with serious passionate caring about love and justice. The end of the volume has several poems which bring to my mind our shared love for exhibits in the NC Museum of Art, or Jack's love of crystals--always done in a way you don't expect! Enjoy!
I've spent the week slowly working through my good friend Jack's fourth volume of poetry. There is a good deal of anger here at injustice (the poem about Eric Garner's death leads off the collection) but there is more in here about the redemptive quality of his love for his wife and daughter. "Warmth", "No Need", "You're the Joy", "Just a Kiss", and "Impressionist" stand out, all evocative and passionate. Well worth the investment of time and purchase price on behalf of the reader.
